There are many anglers that like to catch smaller fish and many of them opt to fish in areas that are close to land. Although there is always the chance that they may catch something of the larger size, these are fish that usually break no records for the area. Offshore fishing, on the other hand, is for the angler that is looking for the bigger catch.
Offshore fishing is for the angler that likes a bigger fight when he goes deep sea fishing. This will require tackle that is very sturdy and able to handle the weight of fish. It will also require special rods and reels that are produced for this particular type of fishing.
Because the catch is much bigger when you’re engaged in offshore fishing, larger boats will be needed. There are many fishing expedition companies that offer the service of these bigger boats however they do cost more than those that are smaller in nature. One of the reasons behind this is the special fitting for the larger rods and they have to have a larger engine to handle the water and the weight load.
There are several different types of fish that are caught by the offshore fisherman, these include broadbill, swordfish, marlin and sailfish. Offshore fishing can also bring in larger tunas such as the bluefin, yellowfin and bigeye. Sharks are also a favorite and they include great white, tiger, mako, hammerhead and other large species. If you’re fishing in the Atlantic, tarpon is also considered a favorite. Some smaller fish are also considered viable for catch and they include wahoo, dolphinfish, smaller tuna species such as albacore and skipjack tuna, and barracuda.
The US has the world’s largest offshore fishing industry and this includes a line that runs along the entire length of the East Coast, from Key West to the Gulf of Maine. Anglers pursue a variety of tropical and temperate sports fish ranging from giant bluefin tuna in Massachusetts and in Canadian waters to sailfish and dolphinfish in the Florida Keys. The West Coast lacks the influence of the warm Gulf Stream current. California is known for its variety of tuna which is a fine pick for anglers in that region of the country.
One of the favorite fish that is caught off the coast of North Carolina through the Florida regions is the Blue Marlin. They have been known to be more than six-foot in length and weigh more than 250 in pounds. There are several tournaments throughout the coast that are specifically aimed at anglers catching this type of fish. Prize money can be enticing and of course the winner receives a trophy. Blue Marlin is also a favorite of many fine restaurants located throughout the coast region.
